The college was established in 1925 by Jesuit missionaries, with Father Francis Bertram serving as its first principal. It is named after St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. The institution was founded with the objective of providing higher education rooted in the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, social responsibility, and service to the marginalised.

Loyola College originally functioned as a constituent college of the University of Madras, offering programmes in arts, humanities, and sciences. Over time, it expanded its academic offerings to include commerce, social work, computer applications, and management studies, alongside a number of postgraduate and research programmes.

Campus and academics

The campus is spread across a sizeable estate in central Chennai and houses departments for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research centres, hostels, a chapel, and sports facilities. The college offers programmes across the streams of arts, science, commerce, and management, and runs evening shift courses as well as self-financed and aided streams.

Several specialised institutes operate under the broader Loyola umbrella, including the Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA), which functions as an autonomous management school on the same campus, and the Loyola Institute of Frontier Energy. The Department of Social Work has been a long-standing feature of the college's academic profile.

Significance

Loyola College is widely regarded as one of the leading arts and science colleges in India and has consistently been ranked among the top institutions of its kind in national rankings. Its alumni network includes notable figures in politics, business, cinema, sports, journalism, and the civil services. The college's combination of Jesuit ethos, academic rigour, and emphasis on extension and outreach activities has shaped its standing in Indian higher education.
