Set largely in the hill town of Theog in Himachal Pradesh, the film follows Parthiban, a mild-mannered café owner and animal rescuer, whose life is upended after he fends off a violent attack on his establishment. The incident draws the attention of figures from a criminal network who insist he is in fact Leo Das, a long-presumed-dead enforcer linked to a narcotics syndicate, setting in motion a confrontation between his present family life and an alleged past identity.
The project was officially announced in early 2023 with the working title Thalapathy 67, marking the first collaboration between Vijay and Lokesh Kanagaraj. The title Leo and the first-look poster were unveiled in February 2023. Principal photography took place across multiple schedules in Chennai, Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, with the Theog and Shimla regions used for the film's snowbound sequences. Action choreography was handled by Anbariv, and the film made extensive use of long-take action set pieces, a stylistic feature associated with the director.
The soundtrack and background score were composed by Anirudh Ravichander, continuing his association with both Vijay and Lokesh Kanagaraj. Singles such as Naa Ready, Badass and the romantic number Ordinary Person were released ahead of the film and received wide circulation on streaming platforms.
Leo released theatrically worldwide on 19 October 2023, coinciding with the Vijayadashami festival period. In addition to the original Tamil version, the film was simultaneously dubbed and released in Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam. Distribution in India and several overseas territories was handled by Seven Screen Studio along with regional partners. Post-theatrical streaming rights were acquired by Netflix, where the film began streaming later in 2023, while satellite rights were taken up by Sun TV.
The film opened to large-scale audience turnout, with multiple early-morning shows scheduled across Tamil Nadu and other markets. Critical response was mixed to positive: reviewers praised Vijay's performance, the technical craft, Anirudh's score and the action sequences, while opinion was divided on the screenplay's pacing and its connections to the wider Lokesh Cinematic Universe. Leo emerged as one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of 2023.
Leo is the third film set in the shared universe begun with Kaithi (2019) and expanded by Vikram (2022). References, recurring characters and a mid-credits sequence link the narrative to events and figures from the earlier films, particularly through the narcotics-trade storyline established in Vikram.
The film was notable as the first directorial collaboration between Lokesh Kanagaraj and Vijay, and as a major commercial release that helped consolidate the Lokesh Cinematic Universe as one of the more prominent shared-universe franchises in Indian cinema. It was also among Vijay's later theatrical releases before his transition into full-time politics with the founding of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
