Background

Lenskart was founded by Peyush Bansal, an alumnus of McGill University and a former Microsoft employee, who started the venture after running an earlier classifieds platform called SearchMyCampus. The company began as a pure online retailer, addressing what its founders described as a low penetration of organised optical retail in India and limited access to affordable prescription eyewear in smaller cities and towns.

Over time, Lenskart expanded into physical retail through a franchise-led model, vertically integrated its supply chain by setting up its own manufacturing and lens-fitting facilities, and developed in-house technology for virtual try-on and home eye-check services.

History

  • 2010: Lenskart launched as an online eyewear retailer by Peyush Bansal, Amit Chaudhary and Sumeet Kapahi under the parent entity Valyoo Technologies.
  • 2013–2014: Began opening physical stores in Indian cities, transitioning to an omnichannel model.
  • 2019: Received a major investment from SoftBank Vision Fund, marking its entry into the unicorn club.
  • 2022: Acquired a majority stake in Owndays, a Japan-based eyewear chain with operations across East and Southeast Asia, significantly expanding its international footprint.
  • 2023: Announced expansion in West Asia and Southeast Asia, and continued scaling its store network in India.

Operations

Retail and e-commerce

Lenskart operates through a website, mobile applications, and a network of company-owned and franchised stores. Customers can book home eye check-ups in many Indian cities, where optometrists visit with portable refraction equipment. The company offers a try-at-home service, three-dimensional virtual try-on technology, and in-store digital eye examinations.

Manufacturing

The company runs an automated eyewear manufacturing facility in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, and has announced further capacity expansion, including a large facility in Telangana. Vertical integration covers lens cutting, fitting, and frame assembly.

International presence

Beyond India, Lenskart has a presence in Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and other markets. Through its acquisition of Owndays, the group also operates stores in Japan, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, and other Asian countries.

Investors

Lenskart has raised funding across multiple rounds from investors including SoftBank Vision Fund, KKR, Temasek, Premji Invest, TPG, Kedaara Capital, ChrysCapital, TR Capital, IFC, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA). Peyush Bansal also gained wider public visibility as one of the investors on the Indian television series Shark Tank India.

Significance

Lenskart is widely regarded as one of the largest organised eyewear retailers in India and a notable example of an Indian direct-to-consumer brand that scaled into international markets. Its omnichannel model, combining online ordering with physical stores and home services, has been cited as a factor in the formalisation of the Indian optical industry, which has historically been dominated by small independent opticians.
