The university grew out of the Laxminarayan Institute of Technology, an institution established in Nagpur through an endowment from the Laxminarayan family for the advancement of technological education. For many decades, LIT functioned as a constituent unit of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University and built a reputation in chemical engineering, oils and fats technology, petrochemicals, plastics and polymer technology, pharmaceuticals, and food technology.
To strengthen the institute's standing and grant it greater academic and administrative autonomy, the Government of Maharashtra moved to upgrade LIT into an independent state university. The result was the creation of Laxminarayan Innovation Technological University, which encompasses the legacy academic programmes of LIT while expanding its mandate towards innovation, research, and industry-oriented training.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in technology disciplines that have historically been associated with LIT. These include:
As a technological university, it also emphasises interdisciplinary research, technology transfer, and collaborative work with industry.
LITU is positioned as a specialised technological university for Maharashtra, with particular relevance to the chemical, petrochemical, and process industries. Its base in Nagpur, a major industrial and educational centre in central India, places it within reach of industrial clusters in Vidarbha and neighbouring regions. The conversion of the historic LIT into a full-fledged university is seen as part of a broader effort to consolidate technical and applied science education in the state under autonomous, focused institutions.
