Veterinary education in Haryana was historically conducted as part of Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCS HAU) at Hisar, which was for decades one of the leading agricultural universities in northern India. Recognising the growing importance of livestock, dairying, and animal health to the rural economy of Haryana, the state government carved out a separate veterinary university by reorganising the College of Veterinary Sciences and associated faculties of CCS HAU into a dedicated institution. The new university was constituted by an Act of the Haryana Legislature and named in honour of Lala Lajpat Rai, the freedom fighter and reformer associated with Punjab and Haryana.
The main campus is situated in Hisar, a city in western Haryana that is an established centre of agricultural and livestock research. Hisar also hosts other major institutions in related fields, including CCS HAU and the Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes, making it a regional hub for animal sciences.
LUVAS offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes through its constituent colleges and departments. Core academic units typically include:
Programmes follow norms set by the Veterinary Council of India for veterinary degrees, and the institution coordinates with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research for academic standards and research funding.
The university conducts research on livestock health, breeding and productivity, dairy technology, poultry science, and disease diagnostics, with relevance to Haryana's significant dairy and livestock economy. Extension activities include training of farmers, animal health camps, advisory services, and outreach in collaboration with state departments of animal husbandry and dairying. LUVAS also operates teaching veterinary clinical complexes and hospitals that provide diagnostic and treatment services for both small and large animals.
Haryana is among the leading Indian states in milk production per capita and is home to important indigenous livestock breeds such as Murrah buffalo, Hariana cattle, and Beetal goat. As the state's dedicated veterinary university, LUVAS plays a central role in producing veterinary professionals, supporting livestock-based livelihoods, and contributing to dairy development and animal disease control in the region.
