Mills made his entry into top-class cricket in 1998 and developed into a frontline seam bowler for New Zealand across formats. He was a member of New Zealand's first-ever Twenty20 International (T20I) team, marking his place in the early history of the format for the country.
Mills represented New Zealand in three ICC Cricket World Cups, in 2003, 2011 and 2015. He was part of the squad that finished as runners-up at the 2015 Cricket World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. In 2009, he topped the ICC ODI bowling rankings, and he remained among the top ten bowlers in ODI cricket for a considerable period.
His Test career was curtailed by recurring fitness issues and ended in 2009 after 19 matches. He underwent surgeries and rehabilitation for knee and shoulder injuries at various stages of his career. Despite these setbacks, he established himself as a white-ball specialist and a lead strike bowler for New Zealand in one-day and Twenty20 cricket.
After retiring from playing in 2015, Mills moved into coaching. He served as the bowling coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
