Patterson developed through the New South Wales cricket pathway and was selected for the senior state side while still a teenager. He bats in the top order and has spent much of his career associated with cricket in Sydney, both for the state team in red-ball cricket and for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League.
Patterson made his first-class debut for New South Wales in November 2011 and marked the occasion by scoring a century. In doing so, he became the youngest batsman to score a century in Sheffield Shield cricket. He has since been a regular in the New South Wales line-up in the Sheffield Shield and has also represented the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League.
In January 2019, Patterson was called up to the Australian Test side for the home series against Sri Lanka. He made his Test debut during that series, becoming the 457th cricketer to play Test cricket for Australia. In just his second Test, played in Canberra and also against Sri Lanka, Patterson scored a century.
He was not selected for the 2019 Ashes tour of England and subsequently returned to domestic cricket for the 2019–2020 season with New South Wales.
Patterson holds two notable distinctions in his career. He is recognised as the youngest batsman to have scored a century in Sheffield Shield cricket, a record set on his first-class debut in 2011. Additionally, he has the highest batting average of any Test batsman to have been dismissed at least once, a statistical distinction arising from his short but successful Test career against Sri Lanka.
