Kumaun University is a state public university located in Nainital, Uttarakhand, India. It is one of the oldest universities in the Kumaon region and serves as a major centre of higher education and research in the hill districts of Uttarakhand. The university operates from multiple campuses, primarily in Nainital and Almora, and affiliates a large number of government and private colleges spread across the region.

The university was established to provide higher education in the Kumaon region, an area historically dependent on institutions in the plains for university-level study. It was set up under an Act of the Uttar Pradesh state legislature, before the formation of the separate state of Uttarakhand in the year 2000. After Uttarakhand's creation, Kumaun University continued as a state public university under the new state government.
The Nainital campus, set in the Kumaon Himalayas at the lake town of Nainital, houses several postgraduate departments including science, arts, commerce and law. The Soban Singh Jeena Campus at Almora is another principal seat of teaching and research, named after the freedom fighter and political leader from the region. The university also operates the Bhimtal campus, which focuses on professional and applied courses such as management, biotechnology and information technology.

As the principal university of the Kumaon region, the institution plays an important role in producing research relevant to the central Himalaya, including studies on mountain ecology, biodiversity, geology, regional history, folk culture, and the languages of Uttarakhand. It contributes faculty and researchers to wider national programmes in science and the humanities, and serves as the affiliating body for most degree colleges in the region.
The university is governed in line with the statutes applicable to state universities in Uttarakhand. The Governor of Uttarakhand serves as the Chancellor in an ex officio capacity, while academic and administrative leadership is provided by the Vice-Chancellor, supported by Pro Vice-Chancellors, Registrar, Finance Officer, and statutory bodies such as the Executive Council, Academic Council and Court.
