Kotputli-Behror district

Kotputli-Behror is a district in the northern part of the Indian state of Rajasthan. It was carved out as part of a wider administrative reorganisation of Rajasthan announced in 2023, when the state government created several new districts to bring administration closer to citizens. The district takes its name from its two principal towns, Kotputli and Behror, both of which lie along the Delhi–Jaipur corridor.

Background

Until 2023, the area now constituting Kotputli-Behror was administered as part of two larger districts: the Kotputli region under Jaipur district, and Behror, Neemrana and adjoining tehsils under Alwar district. The Government of Rajasthan, while announcing the creation of new districts, cited the size of the parent districts and the distance citizens had to travel to reach district headquarters as principal reasons for the reorganisation.

Geography

The district lies in the north-eastern part of Rajasthan, adjoining the borders of Haryana. The terrain is largely semi-arid plain, broken by outliers of the Aravalli Range. National Highway 48 (the Delhi–Jaipur corridor, part of the Golden Quadrilateral) traverses the district through Behror, Neemrana and Kotputli, making it one of the more accessible parts of Rajasthan.

Economy

The district's economy is shaped by its location on the Delhi–Jaipur highway and proximity to the National Capital Region. Neemrana hosts a Japanese industrial zone developed by the Rajasthan State Industrial Development and Investment Corporation (RIICO), with manufacturing units in automotive components, electronics and engineering goods. The area also forms part of the broader influence zone of the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor. Agriculture, dairying and stone-related industries are significant in the rural belt, while Kotputli is known historically for cement manufacturing and trade in agricultural produce.

Administration

The district is headed by a District Collector and Magistrate, with a separate Superintendent of Police for law and order. It is divided into tehsils and sub-divisions drawn from the erstwhile Kotputli, Behror, Neemrana, Bansur and Mandhan areas. Local self-government is exercised through municipal bodies in the towns and panchayati raj institutions in rural areas.

Transport

The Delhi–Jaipur section of NH 48 is the spine of the district's road network, supplemented by state highways linking interior tehsils. The North Western Railway's Delhi–Jaipur line passes through the region, with stations including Kotputli. The district is within road-distance of Jaipur International Airport and Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.

Significance

Kotputli-Behror is significant as a corridor district connecting the Rajasthan capital with the National Capital Region. Its creation in 2023 reflected both the rapid industrial growth around Neemrana and Behror and the administrative case for smaller, more responsive districts in a geographically large state.
