Background

The origins of Kotak Mahindra Bank lie in Kotak Mahindra Finance Limited (KMFL), a non-banking financial company established in the mid-1980s by Uday Kotak. The "Mahindra" in the name reflects the early association with the Mahindra family, with Anand Mahindra and Harish Mahindra among the early backers of the venture. Over the years, the group expanded from bill discounting and vehicle financing into a diversified financial services conglomerate.

In February 2003, KMFL received a banking licence from the Reserve Bank of India and was converted into a full-fledged commercial bank, becoming the first non-banking finance company in India to be granted such a licence. The renamed entity, Kotak Mahindra Bank, commenced operations the same year.

History and growth

Following its conversion into a bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank steadily expanded its branch network across Indian cities and towns and built out a portfolio of subsidiaries covering broking, asset management, life and general insurance, and investment banking.

A defining moment in the bank's history came in 2014, when it announced the acquisition of ING Vysya Bank, an old private sector bank with a strong presence in southern India. The merger, completed in 2015, significantly increased Kotak Mahindra Bank's branch footprint, customer base and presence in markets such as Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

The bank also launched Kotak 811, a digital savings account product, expanding its retail customer acquisition through mobile-led onboarding.

In 2023, Uday Kotak stepped down as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer ahead of the end of his term, and Ashok Vaswani was subsequently appointed as Managing Director and CEO of the bank, marking a leadership transition after decades under the founder's stewardship.

Kotak Mahindra Bank operates alongside several subsidiaries within the Kotak Mahindra Group, including:

Operations

The bank provides services across retail banking, corporate and institutional banking, treasury, wealth management and private banking. It serves individual customers, small and medium enterprises, large corporates, and government entities, and has a presence through branches, ATMs and digital platforms across India. Through its international subsidiaries, the group also offers services in select overseas markets.

Significance

Kotak Mahindra Bank is regarded as a notable case study in Indian banking, both for being the first NBFC to obtain a universal banking licence in India and for its sustained growth under founder-led management. It is consistently counted among the largest private sector banks in India by market capitalisation and is part of major Indian stock market indices.
