Background

Kokrajhar district lies in the western part of Assam, bordering West Bengal and Bhutan, and forms part of the Bodoland Territorial Region constituted under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India. Healthcare access in the region has historically depended on district hospitals and referral centres in Guwahati. The setting up of a full-fledged medical college in Kokrajhar is part of a broader expansion of medical education across Assam, which has seen the state government commission new medical colleges in district headquarters to address shortages of doctors and specialist services in rural and tribal areas.

Academics and hospital

The institution is intended to offer the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme along with associated clinical training. The attached teaching hospital is planned to provide services across core specialties including general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, anaesthesiology, and diagnostic departments such as radiology and pathology, in line with norms prescribed for medical colleges in India.

Significance

The college is considered significant for the Bodoland Territorial Region as it is among the first medical colleges located within the council area. It is expected to improve tertiary care access for residents of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Udalguri, and adjoining districts, and to provide local opportunities for medical education to students from the region.
