Background

The refinery was established to meet the growing demand for petroleum products in southern India and was originally set up as a joint venture involving the Government of India and foreign oil majors. It was earlier known as the Cochin Refinery, and the operating company was incorporated as Cochin Refineries Limited. The company was subsequently renamed Kochi Refineries Limited (KRL), reflecting the official renaming of the city of Cochin to Kochi.

Following the restructuring of the Indian public-sector petroleum industry, Kochi Refineries Limited was merged with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, and the facility now functions as BPCL's Kochi Refinery.

Operations

The refinery processes a range of imported and domestic crude oils and produces fuels and feedstocks for the Indian market, including:

  • Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
  • Motor spirit (petrol) and high-speed diesel
  • Aviation turbine fuel and kerosene
  • Naphtha and fuel oils
  • Bitumen and other specialty products
  • Petrochemical feedstocks

The refinery is integrated with downstream petrochemical units and supplies products to markets across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and other parts of India through pipelines, rail and road tankers, and coastal shipping via the Port of Kochi.

Significance

Kochi Refinery is among the largest public-sector refineries in India and is a significant contributor to the industrial economy of Kerala. The Ambalamugal complex, together with associated industries such as fertiliser, petrochemical and organic chemical plants in the vicinity, forms one of the principal industrial clusters in the state. The refinery also supports India's energy security objectives by reducing dependence on imported finished petroleum products.
