Until 2023, the area now forming Khairthal-Tijara district was part of the larger Alwar district. The Government of Rajasthan, on the recommendations of a committee headed by retired IAS officer Ram Lubhaya, announced the creation of several new districts to improve administrative reach and service delivery. Khairthal-Tijara was among the districts notified during this exercise, alongside others such as Kotputli-Behror, Deeg, and Neem ka Thana.
The town of Tijara is historically significant for its association with medieval Mewat rulers and is known for the Tijara Jain temple complex. Khairthal, the headquarters town, is an established mandi town and a centre of trade in agricultural produce, particularly mustard.
The district is located in the semi-arid plains of north-eastern Rajasthan, transitioning towards the Aravalli foothills in parts. It shares boundaries with the redrawn Alwar, Kotputli-Behror, and Deeg districts of Rajasthan, and with districts of Haryana to the north and east. Its proximity to the Delhi–Jaipur and Delhi–Alwar corridors places it within the influence zone of the National Capital Region.
The district is administered by a District Magistrate and Collector, supported by a Superintendent of Police. It comprises tehsils and sub-divisions transferred from the erstwhile Alwar district, including Khairthal, Tijara, Kishangarh Bas, and Kotkasim, among others.
The economy of the district is based on agriculture, with mustard, wheat, bajra, and gram being major crops. Khairthal is one of the largest mustard markets in India. The Tijara and Bhiwadi belt nearby is heavily industrialised, and parts of the district fall within the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor influence zone, hosting manufacturing units in sectors such as steel, electronics, textiles, and auto components.
The creation of Khairthal-Tijara district was intended to bring administrative services closer to residents of the western and northern parts of the former Alwar district, reduce travel for revenue and police functions, and enable focused planning for the industrial corridor along the Rajasthan–Haryana border.
