The Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) is a state public university in Thrissur, Kerala, India. It functions as the affiliating and regulatory body for institutions offering modern medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, paramedical sciences, and Indian systems of medicine within the state. The university was established to bring all health science education in Kerala under a single academic umbrella, replacing the earlier system in which such colleges were affiliated to multiple general universities.

Before the formation of KUHS, medical, dental, nursing, and allied health colleges in Kerala were affiliated to the four general universities of the state — the University of Kerala, the University of Calicut, the Mahatma Gandhi University, and Kannur University — depending on geographic jurisdiction. This dispersal led to differing curricula, examination patterns, and academic calendars across institutions teaching the same disciplines. The need for a dedicated health sciences university, on the lines of similar institutions in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, was discussed for several years before legislative action was taken.
The university was constituted by the Kerala Legislative Assembly through a state act, with its headquarters located in Thrissur, a city often referred to as the cultural capital of Kerala. Thrissur was chosen partly because of its central position within the state and its existing ecosystem of medical and ayurvedic institutions. After its establishment, colleges in modern medicine, homoeopathy, ayurveda, siddha, unani, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and paramedical disciplines across Kerala were progressively transferred from the four general universities to the affiliation of KUHS.
KUHS regulates undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in the health sciences and conducts common entrance and qualifying examinations for affiliated institutions. The broad streams under its purview include:
The university frames syllabi, conducts examinations, awards degrees and diplomas, recognises teachers, and inspects affiliated colleges. It coordinates with national regulatory bodies such as the National Medical Commission, the Dental Council of India, the Indian Nursing Council, the Pharmacy Council of India, and the central councils governing Indian systems of medicine and homoeopathy.
The Governor of Kerala serves as the Chancellor of the university in an ex officio capacity, while the Vice-Chancellor functions as the principal academic and executive officer. Academic governance is exercised through statutory bodies including the General Council, the Academic Council, the Board of Studies for each discipline, and the Finance Committee, in line with the act establishing the university.
By centralising the regulation of health sciences education, KUHS has standardised curricula and examinations across Kerala's large network of government and private medical, dental, nursing, ayurveda, and allied institutions. Kerala has one of the highest densities of health professionals in India, and the university plays a structural role in shaping the training pipeline for this workforce, including for outflows to other Indian states and to the Gulf region, where Kerala-trained nurses and doctors form a sizeable expatriate group.
