The university traces its origins to long-standing institutional efforts in Karnataka to preserve and promote Sanskrit learning. It was established by the Government of Karnataka through state legislation to consolidate Sanskrit education at the university level, building upon the academic foundation provided by older Sanskrit institutions in Bengaluru. The university is headquartered in the Bengaluru Urban district.
The university offers programmes covering classical Sanskrit studies along with associated disciplines such as Vyakarana (grammar), Sahitya (literature), Nyaya (logic), Vedanta, Mimamsa, Dharmashastra, Jyotisha and allied traditional subjects. It conducts undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and research-level programmes, and recognises affiliated Sanskrit colleges and pathashalas across Karnataka. Doctoral research is undertaken in both classical Shastras and the application of Sanskrit studies to modern academic disciplines.
As a state university, it is governed under the relevant Act of the Karnataka State Legislature. It is administered by a Vice-Chancellor, supported by statutory bodies such as the Syndicate, Academic Council and Board of Studies. The Chancellor is the Governor of Karnataka, in accordance with the standard practice for state universities in India.
