KMF functions as the apex marketing and coordinating body for milk producers' cooperative unions across the districts of Karnataka. It procures milk from village-level dairy cooperative societies through district milk unions, processes it at union dairies, and markets liquid milk and value-added dairy products under the Nandini brand. The federation operates on the three-tier Anand Pattern of cooperative organisation popularised by the National Dairy Development Board.
Organised dairying in Karnataka was reshaped under Operation Flood, the dairy development programme launched by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in 1970. The programme aimed to replicate the Anand model of dairy cooperatives, in which farmers own and control the procurement, processing and marketing chain.
The Karnataka Dairy Development Corporation was established in the 1970s to implement Operation Flood in the state. With the consolidation of dairy cooperative unions in subsequent years, the Karnataka Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation was formed as the apex body to oversee marketing and policy coordination among the district unions. The Nandini brand was introduced for the federation's range of milk and milk products and has since become the dominant dairy brand in Karnataka.
KMF follows a three-tier cooperative structure:
Under the Nandini brand, KMF markets a wide range of dairy products, including:
KMF is a major economic institution in rural Karnataka, providing a steady source of income to lakhs of farmer members through daily milk procurement. The Government of Karnataka has, at various times, provided incentives to dairy farmers supplying milk to the cooperative network. The Nandini brand commands a strong market presence in Karnataka, particularly in Bengaluru, and competes with national and regional dairy brands in liquid milk and value-added segments.
