Kapil Sharma is an Indian stand-up comedian, television presenter, actor and producer, widely regarded as one of the most popular faces of Hindi-language comedy television. He rose to nationwide fame after winning the third season of the stand-up comedy contest The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007, and went on to host long-running comedy shows including Comedy Nights with Kapil and The Kapil Sharma Show.

Kapil Sharma was born in Amritsar, Punjab, into a middle-class family. His father, Jeetendra Kumar Punj, served in the Punjab Police, and his mother is Janak Rani. He completed his schooling in Amritsar and graduated from Hindu College, Amritsar, affiliated with Guru Nanak Dev University. He became active in college theatre and participated in stage and youth-festival competitions before entering television.
Sharma first gained attention through Punjabi television programmes and the stand-up circuit. His national breakthrough came when he won the third season of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, broadcast on Star One in 2007, taking home the top prize. He subsequently appeared on a range of comedy and reality formats, including Comedy Circus on Sony Entertainment Television, where he won several seasons partnered with different co-performers, becoming one of the show's signature artistes.
Comedy Nights with Kapil premiered on Colors TV in June 2013 and turned Sharma into a household name across India. The show combined a sketch-style family setting with celebrity interviews, frequently featuring leading Bollywood actors promoting their films. It ran until early 2016 and was among the highest-rated non-fiction Hindi entertainment programmes during its run.
After parting ways with Colors, Sharma launched The Kapil Sharma Show on Sony Entertainment Television in April 2016, produced under his own banner K9 Films. The show followed a similar celebrity-interview and sketch format and went through multiple seasons, brief breaks and relaunches. In 2023, a version of the show began streaming on Netflix, marking his shift to an OTT platform.
Sharma made his Hindi film debut as a lead with Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon (2015), directed by Abbas–Mustan, which performed well commercially. He followed it with Firangi (2017), a period drama set in the pre-Independence era, and Zwigato (2022), directed by Nandita Das, in which he played a food-delivery rider; the latter received critical appreciation at festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival and Busan International Film Festival.
He has hosted award shows, performed live tours in India, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia, and made cameo appearances on several television programmes. He released the single Alone in 2019.
Kapil Sharma married Ginni Chatrath, a college friend from Jalandhar, in December 2018 in a Punjabi wedding ceremony. The couple have two children. He is based in Mumbai and continues to maintain ties with Amritsar and Punjab.
Sharma has received multiple Indian Television Academy Awards, Indian Telly Awards and Colors Golden Petal Awards for his comedy and hosting work. He has appeared on Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list during the peak years of his television career and was named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in 2019.
Kapil Sharma is credited with mainstreaming long-format Hindi sketch comedy on prime-time television, building a programme model in which Bollywood film promotion is integrated into comedy and chat formats. His work helped popularise Punjabi comic idioms and middle-class North Indian humour with a pan-Indian audience and influenced a generation of stand-up performers who came up through television talent contests.
