Kamarhati is a city and municipality in the North 24 Parganas district of the Indian state of West Bengal. Located on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, it forms part of the Kolkata Metropolitan Area and lies within the Barrackpore subdivision. The town is an old industrial centre, historically associated with jute manufacturing along the Hooghly industrial belt.

Kamarhati lies on the eastern bank of the Hooghly, north of Kolkata, and is flanked by neighbouring municipal areas including Baranagar to the south and Panihati to the north. The town is part of the densely urbanised conurbation that stretches along the river from Kolkata towards Barrackpore. The terrain is part of the flat Gangetic delta, with elevation close to sea level.
The town is administered by the Kamarhati Municipality, one of the older urban local bodies of the Hooghly riverside belt. The municipality is divided into wards, each represented by an elected councillor, with a chairperson heading the civic board. Civic responsibilities include water supply, sanitation, street maintenance, public health, and property tax administration.
Kamarhati grew as a settlement on the Hooghly during the colonial period, with industrial development gathering pace in the late nineteenth century. The Kamarhati Jute Mill, established in the 1870s, became one of the prominent jute manufacturing units along the river and shaped the demographic and economic character of the town by attracting migrant labour from Bihar, Odisha, and the United Provinces.
The locality of Ariadaha within the Kamarhati area has historical associations with the saint Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, who is recorded to have visited the area, and with his disciples of the Ramakrishna movement. The Mahesh Bhavan and other sites linked to the nineteenth-century Bengal Renaissance fall within or near the town's limits.
Historically, the economy of Kamarhati has revolved around jute mills and allied small-scale industries. Engineering workshops, light manufacturing, and trade in consumer goods supplement this base. With the decline of jute and the expansion of metropolitan Kolkata, the town has increasingly become a residential suburb, with many residents commuting to Kolkata and Salt Lake for employment.
Kamarhati is the location of the Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital, a state government medical college and teaching hospital that serves the northern suburbs of Kolkata. The town also hosts a number of primary and secondary schools under the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education.
The town is served by the Eastern Railway's Sealdah–Ranaghat and Sealdah–Naihati suburban lines, with stations at Agarpara and the nearby Belghoria providing daily commuter services to Kolkata. Road connectivity is provided by the Barrackpore Trunk Road (B. T. Road), one of the principal arterial routes between Kolkata and Barrackpore, and by the Belghoria Expressway, which links the area to NH 12 and the airport. Ferry services across the Hooghly historically connected the town to settlements on the western bank.
Kamarhati is a Bengali-majority town, with significant Hindi-speaking communities descended from labourers who settled around the jute mills. Bengali is the principal language, with Hindi and Urdu also widely spoken. The population is predominantly Hindu, with Muslim and smaller Christian and Sikh communities.
As one of the older municipal towns of the Hooghly industrial belt, Kamarhati is significant for its role in the colonial-era jute economy and as part of the continuous urban fabric extending north from Kolkata. Its educational and healthcare institutions make it an important node within the suburban network of the Kolkata Metropolitan Area.
