Kalyani was conceived as a planned township in the years following Indian independence, during the chief ministership of Bidhan Chandra Roy in West Bengal. The site, earlier known as Roosevelt Town during the Second World War when it served as an American military base, was redeveloped as a model satellite town for Kolkata. The town was renamed Kalyani, a Sanskrit-derived name meaning "auspicious".
The layout follows a sector-based pattern, with residential areas designated by alphabetical block names (such as A, B and C blocks) and wide arterial roads connecting institutional, commercial and industrial zones.
Kalyani is situated on the eastern bank of the Hooghly (Bhagirathi) River. It is connected to Kolkata by the Sealdah–Ranaghat railway line and by road through National Highway 12 (formerly NH 34) and the Kalyani Expressway. The terrain is flat alluvial plain typical of the Ganga delta, and the climate is humid subtropical with a pronounced monsoon season.
The city is administered by the Kalyani Municipality, which is divided into wards. Kalyani also forms part of the Kalyani Assembly constituency in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
Kalyani is recognised as an educational hub of West Bengal. Major institutions located in or near the city include:
The Kalyani Industrial Area, developed by the West Bengal Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBIIDC), hosts engineering, pharmaceutical, food processing and small-scale manufacturing units. The presence of educational and research institutions has also encouraged related service sector activity.
Kalyani Stadium, a multi-purpose venue, has hosted football matches of national leagues including the I-League and the Indian Super League, in addition to state-level tournaments. The city also has a number of community parks, auditoriums and a central library.
As one of the earliest planned satellite towns of independent India, Kalyani is often cited alongside cities such as Chandigarh and Durgapur as an example of post-independence urban planning in eastern India. Its concentration of higher education, medical and research institutions has shaped its identity as a knowledge-oriented town within the Kolk
