The group traces its industrial roots to Bharat Forge, founded in 1961 by Neelkanth Kalyani. Initially a manufacturer of forged components for the Indian automotive industry, the company grew under the leadership of his son Baba Kalyani, who joined the business in the early 1970s after training as a mechanical engineer at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Under his stewardship, Bharat Forge transitioned from a domestic forge shop into a globally integrated supplier with manufacturing facilities in India, Germany, Sweden, France and North America.
The Kalyani Group is structured as a federation of companies operating across several sectors:
Through Bharat Forge's defence arm, the group has emerged as a significant private-sector participant in India's defence indigenisation programme. It has developed and supplied artillery systems, including the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) developed in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), as well as protected vehicles, components for missile systems and aerospace forgings.
Baba Kalyani serves as chairman and managing director of Bharat Forge and as the de facto head of the wider group. He has been recognised for his role in transforming Indian manufacturing and was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2024 for his contribution to trade and industry. Other members of the Kalyani family hold senior roles across group companies.
The Kalyani Group is widely regarded as a benchmark for Indian engineering exports and for private-sector capability in defence manufacturing. Bharat Forge's global footprint — built through both organic growth and cross-border acquisitions — is often cited as an early example of Indian industry moving up the value chain in advanced manufacturing. The group's investments in artillery systems and armoured platforms have also positioned it as a key participant in the Indian government's "Make in India" and defence self-reliance initiatives.
