Kalol is located on the plains of north-central Gujarat, an area characterised by relatively flat terrain and alluvial soils. The town is connected by road and rail to nearby urban centres including Ahmedabad to the south and Mehsana to the north. It lies along the Ahmedabad–Mehsana corridor, one of the busier transport axes in Gujarat.
It should be distinguished from Kalol in Panchmahal district, a separate town in eastern Gujarat with the same name.
Civic administration in the town is handled by the Kalol Nagarpalika (municipality), which is responsible for local services such as water supply, sanitation, roads, and street lighting. As the taluka headquarters, Kalol also hosts taluka-level revenue and administrative offices serving surrounding villages.
Kalol has a long-standing association with industry in Gujarat. The area around the town is notable for its hydrocarbon resources, and the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has operated production facilities in the Kalol oil and gas field, which is among the producing fields in the Cambay Basin. The town and its surroundings also host engineering, chemical, textile, and small-scale manufacturing units, supported by its location within the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar industrial belt.
Kalol is served by the Kalol Junction railway station on the Western Railway network, lying on the line between Ahmedabad and Mehsana. State and district roads connect the town with Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Kadi, and other regional centres. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at Ahmedabad is the nearest major airport.
The population of Kalol is predominantly Gujarati-speaking, with Hindi also widely understood. The town has a mixed religious composition, with Hindu, Muslim, and Jain communities present, reflecting the broader pattern of north-central Gujarat.
Kalol's significance arises from its role as a taluka headquarters, its position within the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar–Mehsana urban and industrial corridor, and its association with onshore hydrocarbon production in Gujarat. These factors have made it a node for both administrative services and industrial activity in the Gandhinagar district.
