The K.G.F franchise is set against the backdrop of the Kolar Gold Fields in Karnataka, a historic mining region that ceased operations in 2001. The first film, released in December 2018, established the rise of Rocky, an outlaw who seizes control of the gold mines. Following the commercial success of Chapter 1, a sequel was confirmed by Hombale Films, with principal photography beginning in 2019. Production faced delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to multiple shifts in the release schedule.
Continuing the narrative of the first film, Chapter 2 follows Rocky as he consolidates his control over the Kolar Gold Fields after eliminating Garuda. He faces resistance from Adheera (Sanjay Dutt), a ruthless rival warlord, and political opposition from Ramika Sen (Raveena Tandon), the Prime Minister of India in the film's timeline. The story is framed as a recollection by journalist Anand Ingalagi, with the events traced through his manuscript El Dorado.
The film was shot primarily in Karnataka, with extensive sequences filmed at constructed sets in Kolar and at locations across Hyderabad and Mysuru. Bhuvan Gowda served as the director of photography, continuing from Chapter 1. The visual effects were handled by Unifi Media. Ravi Basrur composed the background score and soundtrack, with songs released by Lahari Music and T-Series.
The soundtrack album, composed by Ravi Basrur, features tracks including "Toofan", "Sulthana", "Mehabooba" and "The Monster Song". The Hindi version of the soundtrack was distributed by T-Series, while the Kannada version was released by Lahari Music. The background score was widely noted as a defining element of the film's tone.
After several postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic, K.G.F: Chapter 2 was released worldwide on 14 April 2022, coinciding with the regional festivals of Vishu, Tamil New Year and Vaisakhi. It was released in Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. The Hindi version was distributed by AA Films, while Excel Entertainment handled certain Hindi marketing arrangements. The film opened across more than 10,000 screens worldwide.
The film began streaming on Amazon Prime Video for its Kannada and Malayalam versions, while the Hindi dubbed version premiered on ZEE5. The Tamil and Telugu versions streamed on Amazon Prime Video as well.
The film received largely positive reviews from critics, who praised the performances of Yash and Sanjay Dutt, the cinematography, the action choreography and the background score. Some critics observed that the film leaned heavily on stylised slow-motion sequences and male-led heroism. Chapter 2 emerged as one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 2022, performing strongly in both the Kannada-speaking market and the Hindi belt.
The success of K.G.F: Chapter 2 is widely regarded as a turning point for Kannada cinema in pan-Indian distribution. Together with films like Baahubali and RRR, it contributed to the broader trend of South Indian films achieving large-scale national and international theatrical reach. The film also strengthened Hombale Films' position as a major production house in Indian cinema, paving the way for subsequent pan-Indian projects such as Kantara and Salaar.
At the conclusion of the film, the makers announced the development of K.G.F: Chapter 3, with Prashanth Neel attached to direct and Hombale Films producing.
