The narrative is structured as a story-within-a-story, framed by a journalist recounting events to a publisher. It follows Rocky, a man born into poverty in coastal Karnataka who rises through the Mumbai underworld and is eventually sent to the Kolar Gold Fields, where workers are held in bondage by a powerful syndicate headed by the Garuda family. The film blends elements of period drama, gangster fiction and mass action, set against a fictionalised version of the gold mines of Kolar district.
The film was shot simultaneously in Kannada, with dubbed versions prepared in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam, making it one of the early pan-Indian releases from the Kannada industry. Filming took place at locations including Kolar, Mysuru and parts of Karnataka, with extensive use of constructed sets to recreate the mining township. The Hindi version was presented in North India by Farhan Akhtar's Excel Entertainment and Ritesh Sidhwani, alongside AA Films.
The soundtrack and background score were composed by Ravi Basrur. Tracks such as "Salaam Rocky Bhai", "Dheera Dheera" and "Gali Gali" (in the Hindi version) gained wide circulation and contributed significantly to the film's marketing.
K.G.F: Chapter 1 opened on 21 December 2018 across multiple Indian languages. It became one of the highest-grossing Kannada films at the time of its release and helped establish a national audience for Kannada cinema in the dubbed-film market, particularly in Hindi-speaking regions. The film received praise for its visual style, action sequences, performances by Yash and Anant Nag, and Ravi Basrur's score, while some critics noted the non-linear narrative and stylised treatment.
The film won two National Film Awards at the 66th National Film Awards: Best Action Direction (Anbariv) and Best Special Effects. It also received several Filmfare Awards South and SIIMA Awards in technical and popular categories.
K.G.F: Chapter 1 is widely regarded as a turning point for the Kannada film industry, demonstrating that a film made primarily in Kannada could achieve theatrical success across India through simultaneous multilingual release. Its commercial performance influenced later pan-Indian projects from Hombale Films and other Kannada producers, and contributed to broader interest in films such as Kantara and the Salaar series, the latter also directed by Prashanth Neel.
The story continues in K.G.F: Chapter 2, released on 14 April 2022, which features Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon and Prakash Raj alongside the returning cast. Together, the two films are referred to as the K.G.F franchise. A third instalment has been announced by Hombale Films.
