The institution traces its origin to KL College of Engineering, which was established by the Koneru Lakshmaiah Charities as a self-financing engineering college affiliated to a state university in Andhra Pradesh. Over time, the college expanded its academic offerings beyond core engineering disciplines to include programmes in business administration, pharmacy, architecture, law, and the basic sciences.
The university is named after Koneru Lakshmaiah, the educationist and founder associated with the Koneru Lakshmaiah Charities, the trust that sponsors the institution.
KL College of Engineering was conferred deemed-to-be university status by the Government of India under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Following this recognition, the institution adopted the academic identity of KL University while continuing to operate under the legal name Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation. Its engineering programmes have been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), and the institution has participated in national assessments conducted by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
The university is organised into schools and departments offering programmes at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. Its principal areas of teaching and research include:
Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes are made through the institution's own entrance examination, KLEEE (KL University Engineering Entrance Examination), in addition to admissions based on national-level test scores.
KL University is one of the larger private deemed universities in coastal Andhra Pradesh and contributes to the higher-education landscape of the Vijayawada–Guntur region. Its growth from a single engineering college into a multi-disciplinary deemed university reflects the broader expansion of private technical education in Andhra Pradesh from the late twentieth century onward.
