Jwala Gutta was born on 7 September 1983 in Wardha, Maharashtra, to Kranti Gutta, a Telugu from Andhra Pradesh, and Yelan Gutta, of Chinese origin whose family had settled in India. She grew up in Hyderabad, where she took up badminton at a young age and trained under the well-known coach S. M. Arif at the Lal Bahadur Stadium. Her early grounding under Arif shaped her doubles game, which became her primary discipline at the senior level.
Gutta won the senior national women's doubles title a record number of times, dominating the domestic circuit through the 2000s and into the 2010s. She also won multiple national mixed doubles titles, partnering players such as V. Diju.
Her most successful international partnership was with Ashwini Ponnappa. The pair won the women's doubles gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, defeating the Malaysian pair in the final. At the 2011 BWF World Championships in London, Gutta and Ponnappa won the bronze medal in women's doubles, becoming the first Indian pair to win a medal in that event at the World Championships.
The duo also won bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and represented India at the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics.
In mixed doubles, Gutta partnered V. Diju with considerable success. The pair reached a career-high BWF world ranking inside the top 10, won several Grand Prix-level titles on the international circuit and were finalists at multiple international opens. They were a regular Indian entry in mixed doubles at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games during the late 2000s and early 2010s.
Gutta played in the Indian Badminton League (later Premier Badminton League), turning out for franchises in different seasons of the tournament.
Gutta was married to fellow Indian badminton player Chetan Anand; the marriage later ended in divorce. In 2021, she married Telugu film actor Vishnu Vishal. After retirement, she has been active as a commentator, columnist and television personality, and has appeared on Indian reality and dance shows.
Jwala Gutta is regarded as a pioneer of doubles badminton in India, a discipline historically overshadowed by singles. Her partnership with Ashwini Ponnappa raised the profile of Indian women's doubles internationally, and her success with V. Diju in mixed doubles helped establish India as a competitive presence beyond singles events. She has also been a prominent voice on issues such as athlete welfare, selection policies and inclusivity in Indian sport.
