Jr NTR was born into the Nandamuri family, one of the most prominent families in Telugu cinema and politics. His father, Nandamuri Harikrishna, was an actor and politician, and his grandfather N. T. Rama Rao was a leading figure of Telugu cinema and the founder of the Telugu Desam Party. He has elder and younger siblings, including the actor Nandamuri Kalyan Ram. He completed his schooling at the Hyderabad Public School and later pursued higher education in Hyderabad.
He made his screen debut as a child artist in Brahmarshi Viswamitra (1991), directed by and starring his grandfather. He subsequently appeared in Ramayanam (1996), in which he played the role of Rama; the film won the National Film Award for Best Children's Film.
Jr NTR's first lead role came with Ninnu Choodalani (2001), but it was Student No. 1 (2001), directed by S. S. Rajamouli, that brought him recognition. The collaboration with Rajamouli continued with Simhadri (2003), a major commercial success that established him as a leading actor. Other early successes included Aadi (2002), directed by V. V. Vinayak, and Subbu (2002).
Over the following years he featured in films such as Naa Alludu (2005), Ashok (2006), Rakhi (2006), and Yamadonga (2007), the last directed by Rajamouli. Kantri (2008) and Adhurs (2010) reinforced his standing in mass-oriented cinema.
The 2010s saw a series of commercial hits including Brindavanam (2010), Oosaravelli (2011), Baadshah (2013), Temper (2015) directed by Puri Jagannadh, Nannaku Prematho (2016) directed by Sukumar, Janatha Garage (2016) directed by Koratala Siva, Jai Lava Kusa (2017) in which he played triple roles, and Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava (2018) directed by Trivikram Srinivas.
In 2022, Jr NTR played Komaram Bheem in S. S. Rajamouli's RRR, alongside Ram Charan. The film became one of the highest-grossing Indian films and gained significant international attention. The song "Naatu Naatu" from the film, picturised on Jr NTR and Ram Charan, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards. The film and his performance brought him recognition beyond Indian-language cinema.
His subsequent projects include Devara: Part 1 (2024), directed by Koratala Siva, and an upcoming film with director Prashanth Neel.
Jr NTR hosted the Telugu version of the reality television series Bigg Boss in its first season (2017) on Star Maa.
He married Lakshmi Pranathi in May 2011 in Hyderabad. The couple has two sons. He has generally maintained distance from active politics, although members of his extended family have been associated with the Telugu Desam Party.
Jr NTR is regarded as one of the principal stars of contemporary Telugu cinema, with a career spanning more than two decades as a lead actor. His range across mass entertainers and performance-oriented roles, combined with his association with directors such as S. S. Rajamouli, Sukumar, Koratala Siva, and Trivikram Srinivas, has placed him at the centre of major Telugu productions. The international success of RRR contributed to wider visibility for Telugu cinema in global markets.
