The show is part of a global franchise of dance competitions originating from BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, which has been adapted across several countries. In India, the format was acquired and developed for Hindi-language audiences, combining mainstream celebrity participation with structured ballroom, contemporary, Latin and Bollywood-style choreography. Each celebrity is paired with a trained choreographer, and the pair is required to learn and perform a new routine each week, with eliminations decided through a combination of judges' scores and audience voting.
Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa premiered in 2008 on Sony Entertainment Television. The show ran for four seasons on Sony before moving to Colors TV with its fifth season. Subsequent seasons have been telecast on Colors, with the format periodically refreshed in terms of judging panel, host and on-screen design. Streaming availability has been provided through the network's associated digital platform.
Across its run, the judges' panel has featured well-known figures from Hindi cinema and choreography. Recurring and notable judges have included choreographers Farah Khan, Remo D'Souza, Geeta Kapur and Terence Lewis, alongside actors such as Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit Nene (in later seasons) and others, with the panel rotating between seasons. The show has also been hosted across seasons by personalities including Shahid Kapoor, Manish Paul, Karan Johar, Ranvir Shorey and Maniesh Paul, among others.
Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa has played a notable role in popularising celebrity dance competitions on Indian prime-time television. The show has provided wider visibility to choreographers, several of whom have gone on to judge or mentor on other dance reality formats. It has also been credited with bringing a range of dance styles, including ballroom, contemporary, jazz and fusion, to a mainstream Hindi-speaking audience that had previously been more familiar with film-based choreography. Over its multiple seasons, it has hosted contestants from cinema, television soap operas, sports and music, contributing to crossover popularity for participating celebrities.
