The university traces its institutional lineage to the College of Engineering, Kakinada, one of the older engineering colleges in southern India, which became a constituent unit of the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University system after that university was established in Hyderabad. Following a statewide reorganisation of the JNTU system by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, the Kakinada campus was elevated to the status of an independent university, with jurisdiction over affiliated technical colleges in the coastal Andhra and adjoining regions.
JNTUK functions both as a teaching university through its constituent colleges and as an affiliating university for a large number of private engineering and pharmacy colleges across several districts of Andhra Pradesh. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes covering disciplines such as:
Constituent units include the University College of Engineering, Kakinada, along with other constituent colleges established at locations within its territorial jurisdiction. Admissions to undergraduate engineering and pharmacy programmes are made through state-level entrance examinations conducted by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, while postgraduate admissions follow national tests such as GATE alongside state-level counselling.
The university is established under an Act of the Andhra Pradesh State Legislature and is governed by statutory bodies including an Executive Council and an Academic Senate. The Vice-Chancellor serves as the principal executive and academic officer, while the Governor of Andhra Pradesh acts as the Chancellor in line with the practice for state universities.
As one of the major technical universities in Andhra Pradesh, JNTUK plays a significant role in producing engineering and technology graduates from the coastal Andhra region. Its research activity spans areas such as renewable energy, materials science, communications, computer science, biotechnology and pharmaceutical sciences. Through its affiliating role, the university shapes the curriculum and academic standards for a substantial share of technical higher education in the state.
