The university traces its origins to the establishment of a College of Engineering at Hyderabad, which subsequently became one of the constituent campuses of the larger Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University system created in Andhra Pradesh. With the reorganisation of the original university structure, JNTU Hyderabad emerged as an independent technological university with its own jurisdiction, affiliated colleges, and constituent units.
Following the formation of the state of Telangana in 2014, JNTUH continued to function as a state university under the Government of Telangana, retaining its role as one of the principal technical universities in the region.
The university operates through a combination of constituent colleges, affiliated colleges, and specialised research units. Its academic offerings span undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, with particular emphasis on engineering and applied sciences.
In addition to its constituent units, the university affiliates a large network of private engineering and pharmacy colleges across Telangana, conducting common examinations and prescribing curricula for these institutions.
The main campus of JNTUH is situated in Kukatpally, in the north-western part of Hyderabad, along the route connecting the city to Medchal. The campus houses administrative offices, the principal engineering college, research centres, hostels, and academic departments.
JNTUH conducts research across a wide range of engineering disciplines, including computer science, electronics, electrical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical sciences. The university awards doctoral degrees and runs sponsored research projects funded by central and state agencies.
As one of the largest affiliating technical universities in southern India, JNTUH plays a central role in shaping engineering and pharmacy education in Telangana. Its examination and curriculum frameworks influence a substantial portion of the technical workforce trained in the state, and its constituent colleges are regarded among the established public engineering institutions in the region.
