Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Wardha, is a medical college located in Sawangi (Meghe), near Wardha in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, India. It functions as a constituent college of the Datta Meghe Institute of Higher Education and Research, a deemed university recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The college offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in medicine and allied health sciences, and is associated with a large teaching hospital that serves a substantial portion of the rural and semi-urban population of Vidarbha.
Wardha district holds particular historical significance in India as the base of Mahatma Gandhi's Sevagram Ashram, and the region has a long tradition of public service and community health outreach. JNMC's location in this setting has shaped an institutional emphasis on rural health care and community medicine.
The college was established under the aegis of the Datta Meghe group of educational institutions, which has developed a cluster of health sciences colleges and research facilities on a single integrated campus at Sawangi (Meghe). Over the decades, the institution expanded its academic offerings from the foundational MBBS programme to a wide range of postgraduate medical specialities and super-speciality disciplines. The deemed university status granted to the parent institution allowed JNMC to conduct its own examinations and award degrees independently of a conventional affiliating university.
The college is recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the statutory body that regulates medical education in India, formerly known as the Medical Council of India (MCI).
JNMC offers the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree as its primary undergraduate qualification. At the postgraduate level, the college provides MD (Doctor of Medicine) and MS (Master of Surgery) degrees across a broad range of clinical and non-clinical specialities. Super-speciality programmes leading to DM and MCh degrees are also available in select disciplines.
The institution additionally supports PhD programmes in basic medical sciences and clinical research through the deemed university framework. Nursing, physiotherapy, and other allied health sciences programmes are offered through sister institutions on the same campus.
The academic curriculum follows the competency-based medical education (CBME) framework introduced by the NMC for undergraduate medical training across India.
Clinical training is conducted at Acharya Vinoba Bhave Rural Hospital (AVBRH), the teaching hospital attached to JNMC on the Sawangi campus. AVBRH is a large multi-speciality hospital that caters predominantly to patients from rural Vidarbha, many of whom belong to economically weaker sections. The hospital's patient load provides students with exposure to a wide spectrum of clinical conditions, including tropical diseases, agricultural injuries, and conditions associated with rural poverty.
The hospital houses departments spanning general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ENT, psychiatry, dermatology, and numerous other specialities. Dedicated intensive care units, operation theatres, and diagnostic facilities support both patient care and clinical teaching.
The Sawangi (Meghe) campus is a self-contained academic township that houses multiple colleges, the teaching hospital, residential quarters for faculty and students, a central library, sports facilities, and administrative buildings. The central library maintains a collection of medical texts, journals, and digital resources accessible to students and researchers.
Hostel accommodation is available separately for male and female students. The campus is connected to Wardha city by road, and Wardha railway station provides rail connectivity to major cities including Nagpur, Pune, and Mumbai.
Admission to the MBBS programme is governed by the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Postgraduate admissions follow NEET-PG norms as mandated by the NMC. Seat allocation is carried out through the centralised counselling process administered by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and the Maharashtra state counselling authority for state quota seats.
Students at JNMC participate in a range of academic and extracurricular activities including medical conferences, cultural festivals, sports meets, and community health camps. The college encourages participation in rural health outreach programmes, which are integrated into the curriculum through postings in community health centres and primary health centres in the surrounding districts.
