The college is named after Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, whose policies in the 1950s laid the groundwork for the development of education and administration in what was then the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA). Pasighat, the town where the college is situated, is the oldest town in Arunachal Pradesh and has historically been a hub of administrative and educational activity in the Siang region.
The institution offers undergraduate programmes across the streams of arts, science and commerce, and is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University (formerly Arunachal University), the principal state university for higher education in Arunachal Pradesh.
As a general degree college, Jawaharlal Nehru College conducts Bachelor's degree courses following the syllabus prescribed by its affiliating university. The college caters to students from across the Siang belt and other parts of Arunachal Pradesh, and plays a role in providing access to higher education in a predominantly tribal and geographically remote region.
Being among the earlier colleges established in Arunachal Pradesh, Jawaharlal Nehru College has contributed to the spread of higher education in the state's eastern districts. Its location in Pasighat — a gateway town situated near the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas and the banks of the Siang river — has made it an important institution for students from the Adi community and other indigenous groups of the region.
