Background

The Navodaya Vidyalaya scheme has its origin in section 5.15 of the National Policy on Education, 1986 (NPE 86), which proposed the establishment of a residential school known as a Navodaya Vidyalaya in every district of India. These schools were envisioned as pace-setting institutions to provide quality modern education, with a particular focus on talented children, including those from rural areas. JNV Kanpur Nagar was set up in 1987 as part of this initiative.

Campus and location

The school occupies a campus of approximately 35 acres in the Sarsaul area of Kanpur Nagar district. It is situated near Navodaya Nagar, close to National Highway 2 (the historic Grand Trunk Road), which links the school to the broader regional road network.

Administration

Like all Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, JNV Kanpur is administered as an autonomous institution under the Department of Education in the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India, within the wider Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti system.
