Jason Behrendorff

Jason Paul Behrendorff (born 20 April 1990) is an Australian cricketer who has represented Australia in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). A left-arm fast bowler, he played first-class and List A cricket for Western Australia for over a decade before retiring from those formats at the end of the 2024–25 Australian cricket season. He continues to play Twenty20 cricket in the Big Bash League (BBL), having joined the Melbourne Renegades after a long association with the Perth Scorchers.

Background

Behrendorff was born in New South Wales but grew up in Canberra, where he developed his cricket through the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) representative system. He played for the ACT at both junior and senior levels before relocating to Western Australia for the 2009–10 season in pursuit of greater first-class opportunities.

Domestic career

Western Australia

Behrendorff made his state-level debut in the 2010–11 season, initially earning matches as a replacement for injured fast bowlers. He subsequently established himself as a regular member of the Western Australia squad, opening the bowling in both the Sheffield Shield and the one-day domestic competition, which during part of his career was known as the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup.

Big Bash League

He made his Big Bash League debut for the Perth Scorchers during the 2012–13 BBL season. He was part of the Scorchers' back-to-back title-winning teams in the 2013–14 and 2014–15 seasons, and later featured in the franchise's championship triumphs in 2021–22 and 2022–23.

After 13 years with the Scorchers, Behrendorff signed a three-year contract with the Melbourne Renegades, citing a long-term ambition to relocate to Melbourne following his playing career.

International career

Behrendorff has represented Australia in One Day International and Twenty20 International cricket as a left-arm pace bowler.

Retirement from longer formats

At the conclusion of the 2024–25 Australian domestic season, Behrendorff announced his retirement from first-class and List A cricket, while indicating his intention to continue playing T20 cricket in the Big Bash League.

Significance

Behrendorff is among the prominent left-arm quicks produced by Australian domestic cricket in the 2010s and 2020s. His longevity with Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers, including involvement in four BBL title campaigns, marks him as a notable figure in the development of the Scorchers franchise.
