Janjgir is a town and municipality in the Janjgir-Champa district of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. It serves as the administrative headquarters of the district and forms part of the twin urban area of Janjgir–Naila. The town is historically associated with the Vishnu Mandir (Vishnu Temple), an unfinished medieval Hindu temple of considerable archaeological importance.

Janjgir is located in the eastern plains of Chhattisgarh, in a region drained by the Mahanadi river system and its tributary the Hasdeo. The surrounding countryside is largely agricultural, with paddy as the dominant crop, and the area is historically considered part of the rice belt of central India.
The town's name is traditionally linked to Jajvalyadeva (Jajalladeva), a ruler of the Kalachuri dynasty of Ratanpur, who is credited with founding the settlement, originally referred to as Jajvalyapura. Under the Kalachuris, the area developed as a regional centre and saw the construction of temples and tanks that survive in fragmentary form.
The most prominent monument is the Vishnu Mandir, an unfinished stone temple from the medieval period, noted for its detailed carvings depicting episodes from Hindu epics and mythology. The temple, along with the adjoining tank, is a protected site of archaeological interest.
During the colonial period, the area formed part of the Bilaspur district under the Central Provinces. After Indian independence and the reorganisation of states, it remained within Madhya Pradesh until the formation of Chhattisgarh on 1 November 2000. Janjgir-Champa district was carved out of Bilaspur district in 1998, with Janjgir as its headquarters.
Janjgir functions as a municipal council and is the seat of the district collectorate, the district court, and other government offices of Janjgir-Champa district. The town lies within the Janjgir–Champa Lok Sabha constituency, which is reserved for Scheduled Castes.
Janjgir is connected to the broader region through the Naila Janjgir railway station, which lies on the Howrah–Mumbai main line of the Indian Railways and is one of the busier stations in the Bilaspur railway division. Road links connect the town to Bilaspur, Korba, Raigarh and Champa.
The local economy is based primarily on agriculture, trade and administrative services. The wider Janjgir-Champa district has, since the 2000s, attracted investment in thermal power generation and aluminium-related industries, and Janjgir town serves as a service and market centre for this hinterland.
Apart from the Vishnu Mandir, the town and its environs contain several smaller shrines and tanks dating from the Kalachuri and later periods. Local festivals follow the broader Chhattisgarhi calendar, including Hareli, Pola, Teeja and Navratri observances.
