The college is situated in Jangipur, a town on the bank of the Bhagirathi river that has historically been a centre of the silk trade and bidi industry in lower Bengal. Like many general degree colleges in West Bengal, Jangipur College was established to widen access to higher education in a semi-urban region where students would otherwise have had to travel to Berhampore, Kolkata, or Kalyani for university-level study.
The college conducts three-year undergraduate honours and general (programme) courses under the affiliating university. Typical departments at such colleges in the region include Bengali, English, History, Political Science, Philosophy, Geography, Economics, Sanskrit, and Education in the arts faculty, alongside Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, and Computer Science in the sciences, with Commerce offered in some streams. Curricula and examinations follow the regulations of the affiliating university and the directives of the Government of West Bengal's Department of Higher Education.
Jangipur College is administered by a governing body in line with the norms set by the West Bengal higher education authorities. The day-to-day functioning is led by the Principal, supported by faculty members organised into departments and assisted by non-teaching staff. Students' affairs are handled through a students' union and various academic and cultural sub-committees.
The campus provides classrooms, departmental laboratories for the science streams, a central library, and facilities for sports and cultural activities. The college organises annual functions, departmental seminars, and observances of national days, and participates in inter-college events held under the affiliating university.
As the principal degree college of the Jangipur area, the institution plays an important role in the educational landscape of northern Murshidabad, a district with a large rural population and significant minority representation. It serves as a feeder institution to postgraduate programmes at universities such as Kalyani University, the University of Calcutta, and Aliah University.
