How was educated at Palmerston North Boys' High School, a state secondary school in the Manawatū region of New Zealand that has a long association with the development of cricketers in the country. His early cricketing pathway led him into the Central Districts set-up, one of the six major associations contesting New Zealand's domestic first-class and limited-overs competitions.
How made his first-class debut in the 2000–2001 season for Central Districts. Over the following seasons he established himself as a top-order batsman, and was eventually appointed captain of the side. He was regarded as a steady scoring opening batsman, and bowled occasional off-spin as a secondary skill.
He earned his international call-up for New Zealand during the 2005–2006 season. He went on to play for the Black Caps in Test cricket, ODIs and T20Is before retiring from international cricket.
How was known primarily as a top-of-the-order batsman whose game was built around occupation of the crease and steady accumulation rather than aggressive stroke-play. His right-arm off-spin was used sparingly as a partnership-breaking option.
