The institution traces its origins to the educational and research activities developed around Hamdard Dawakhana, a firm established in Delhi in the early twentieth century that produced Unani medicines. Under Hakeem Abdul Hameed, Hamdard's commercial activity was placed within a charitable framework, and a portion of its surplus was directed towards education, healthcare, and research. This led to the founding of the Indian Institute of History of Medicine and Medical Research, the Hamdard Tibbi College, and other affiliated bodies that were later integrated into a unified university.
Jamia Hamdard was conferred the status of a deemed-to-be university by the Government of India in 1989 under the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. The institution was inaugurated as a university in the same year, drawing together the existing colleges of pharmacy, medicine, and Unani sciences that had been operating under the Hamdard educational framework.
The university is organised into several schools and faculties, including:
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across these disciplines.
The main campus is located in Hamdard Nagar, near Tughlaqabad in south Delhi, adjoining the historic Tughlaqabad Fort area. The campus houses academic blocks, research laboratories, libraries, residential hostels, and the teaching hospital attached to the medical school.
Jamia Hamdard is recognised as one of the prominent centres in India for the formal study of Unani medicine alongside modern pharmaceutical and medical education. Its School of Pharmaceutical Education and Research has been ranked among the leading pharmacy institutions in the country in national assessments. The university is also notable as an example of a private philanthropic Wakf-based institution that has grown into a multi-disciplinary university recognised by the central government.
