The enterprise was founded by Bhavarlal Hiralal Jain (1937–2016), an entrepreneur from Jalgaon district in northern Maharashtra. Beginning as a small trading concern dealing in agricultural inputs, the business gradually moved into manufacturing, with a particular focus on plastic-based products suited to Indian farming. Bhavarlal Jain, often referred to as "Bhau", was a recipient of the Padma Shri for his contribution to industry and agriculture.
The company entered the micro-irrigation business in the late 1980s, at a time when drip irrigation was little known in Indian agriculture. Through demonstration farms, dealer networks, and partnerships with state agricultural agencies, Jain Irrigation became a major proponent of water-efficient farming techniques in India, particularly in water-stressed regions of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
The business expanded from agricultural trading into the manufacture of PVC pipes, sheets, and other polymer-based products. The Jalgaon plant grew into a large industrial complex serving both domestic and export markets.
From the 1990s onward, the company diversified into:
Jain Irrigation expanded internationally through acquisitions in irrigation and food processing, building manufacturing and distribution operations in countries including the United States, Israel, and several European nations. Its food processing subsidiary supplies major global food and beverage brands with processed mango, onion, and other ingredients.
In subsequent years, the company undertook a significant restructuring of its balance sheet, including separating parts of its overseas irrigation business and aligning operations with international partners in the irrigation sector.
Jain Irrigation is considered a pioneer of micro-irrigation in India. Its work has been linked with broader policy discussions on water conservation, the "More Crop per Drop" approach, and government schemes promoting drip irrigation under programmes such as the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana. The company's tissue-culture banana plantlets have been credited with influencing banana cultivation practices in states such as Maharashtra and Gujarat.
The Jalgaon headquarters, known as Jain Hills and Jain Valley, hosts research farms, training centres, and demonstration plots used by farmers, extension officers, and visiting researchers from India and abroad.
After the death of founder Bhavarlal Jain in 2016, the company has been run by his sons, including Ashok Jain, Anil Jain, Ajit Jain, and Atul Jain, in various executive and board roles. The Jain family continues to be the principal promoter of the group.
Through the Bhavarlal & Kantabai Jain Foundation and related initiatives, the company supports rural development, education, water conservation, and Gandhian heritage projects. The Gandhi Teerth museum and research centre in Jalgaon, dedicated to the life and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, was developed under the foundation's patronage.
