For much of its early history it functioned as the YMCA Institute of Engineering, offering diploma and degree programmes in engineering disciplines while remaining affiliated to other universities in Haryana.
It was subsequently upgraded to a state university by the Government of Haryana under a state legislative act, becoming YMCA University of Science and Technology. The university was later renamed in honour of Jagadish Chandra Bose, reflecting its emphasis on science, technology, and research.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes through faculties and departments covering core and emerging areas, including:
Admissions to many programmes are conducted through state-level entrance examinations and centralised counselling processes managed by the Haryana State Technical Education Society and related bodies.
The main campus is situated in Sector 6, Faridabad, in the National Capital Region. The campus houses academic blocks, laboratories, central library facilities, hostels, sports infrastructure, and administrative buildings. Its location within the NCR provides students access to industrial and corporate clusters in Faridabad, Gurugram, and Delhi.
As one of Haryana's dedicated technical state universities, JCBUST plays a notable role in producing engineering and management graduates for the industries of the National Capital Region. Its identification with the YMCA's educational tradition links it to a broader history of vocational and technical education in northern India, while its present mandate aligns with state and national priorities in higher technical education and research.
