Background

JSW Steel traces its origins to the Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Limited (JVSL) project initiated in the 1990s near Toranagallu in the Bellary–Hospet belt of Karnataka, an area chosen for its proximity to iron ore reserves. The current entity was formed through the merger of Jindal Iron and Steel Company (JISCO) and Jindal Vijayanagar Steel, consolidating the steel businesses of the Sajjan Jindal-led arm of the Jindal family that had earlier been part of the larger O. P. Jindal Group.

Operations

The company's principal manufacturing complex is the Vijayanagar Works in Karnataka, one of the largest single-location steel plants in India. Other major Indian facilities include:

  • Dolvi Works in Raigad district, Maharashtra, an integrated coastal plant.
  • Salem Works in Tamil Nadu, focused on alloy and special steels for the automotive sector.
  • Downstream and coated-products plants at Vasind, Tarapur and Kalmeshwar in Maharashtra.

Internationally, JSW Steel owns plate and pipe mill operations in the United States and has acquired steel assets in Italy through subsidiaries. The company has also expanded its presence through acquisitions of distressed Indian steel assets under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, including Bhushan Power and Steel and Monnet Ispat (the latter through a joint venture with AION Capital).

Leadership

Sajjan Jindal, son of industrialist O. P. Jindal, serves as chairman and managing director and is the principal architect of the company's growth. The board has historically included senior professionals from Indian industry, banking and public service. The JSW Group also includes JSW Energy, JSW Infrastructure, JSW Cement and JSW Paints, with shared corporate governance and brand identity.

Significance

JSW Steel is a major contributor to India's crude steel output and plays a significant role in supplying steel to the construction, automotive, infrastructure, oil and gas, and capital goods industries. The Vijayanagar plant has been an important driver of industrial development in north Karnataka, while the Dolvi expansion has reinforced India's coastal steelmaking capacity. The company has also been active in environmental, sustainability and community development programmes through the JSW Foundation.
