Itarsi is a town and municipality in the Narmadapuram district of Madhya Pradesh, India. Situated in the Narmadapuram (formerly Hoshangabad) division, the town is best known for its railway junction, which is one of the most important nodal points on the Indian Railways network in central India.

Itarsi lies in the Narmada valley region of central Madhya Pradesh, on the southern fringe of the Satpura plateau. The town is located south of the Narmada river and falls within the broader Hoshangabad–Narmadapuram region. The surrounding landscape includes agricultural plains, the Satpura ranges to the south, and the catchment of the Tawa river, a tributary of the Narmada.
Itarsi is administered by a municipal council (nagar palika) and forms part of the Narmadapuram district administration. In 2021, the Government of Madhya Pradesh renamed Hoshangabad district as Narmadapuram, of which Itarsi continues to be a major urban centre.
Itarsi Junction (station code: ET) is a major railway junction on the Indian Railways network and is administered under the Bhopal division of West Central Railway. It serves as a key interchange where the Mumbai–Howrah and Delhi–Chennai trunk routes converge, making it one of the busiest junctions in central India. A large number of long-distance Mail, Express, Rajdhani, and Duronto trains pass through or halt at Itarsi.
Itarsi is connected by state highways to Narmadapuram, Bhopal, Betul, and other regional centres, and lies within reach of national highway corridors traversing central Madhya Pradesh.
The local economy is shaped by the railway junction, associated trade and services, agriculture in the surrounding Narmada plains, and small-scale industry. The presence of an Ordnance Factory at the nearby Itarsi area (Ordnance Factory Itarsi, part of the network previously under the Ordnance Factory Board) has historically been a significant employer in the region.
Itarsi's importance is largely derived from its role as a railway hub linking northern, western, southern, and eastern India. The junction handles substantial passenger and freight traffic and is often cited as a strategic point on the central Indian rail network. The town also functions as a service and trading centre for the surrounding rural hinterland.
