Itanagar is the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh, a state in the north-eastern region of India. Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, the city serves as the administrative, political, and cultural centre of the state. It lies in the Papum Pare district and forms part of the Itanagar Capital Complex along with the adjoining town of Naharlagun.

The city derives its name from the historic Ita Fort, a brick-built fortification whose remains lie within the city. The name Ita means "bricks" in the Assamese language, and the fort is generally dated to around the 14th–15th centuries.
Itanagar is situated in the lower Himalayan foothills in the western part of Arunachal Pradesh. The terrain is hilly and forested, with the city spreading along ridges and valleys. It lies a short distance north of the Assam plains, with Naharlagun acting as a transit hub between the capital and the broader transport network of Assam.
The site has long been associated with the ancient Ita Fort, identified by some scholars with Mayapur, a settlement linked to local ruling dynasties of the medieval period. In modern times, Arunachal Pradesh was administered as the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA) before becoming a Union Territory in 1972 and a full-fledged state of the Indian Union in 1987.
Itanagar was selected as the capital of the Union Territory of Arunachal Pradesh in 1972, replacing Shillong, which had previously served as the administrative headquarters. With statehood in 1987, it became the state capital.
Itanagar functions as the seat of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, the Raj Bhavan (residence of the Governor), the Secretariat, and the High Court of Arunachal Pradesh. Civic affairs are managed by the Itanagar Municipal Corporation. The Itanagar Capital Complex covers Itanagar, Naharlagun, and surrounding areas.
Itanagar is home to a diverse mix of indigenous communities of Arunachal Pradesh, including the Nyishi, Adi, Apatani, Galo, and others, alongside settlers from elsewhere in India. Major festivals celebrated in the city include Nyokum, Solung, Mopin, and Losar. The state museum in the city houses ethnographic collections related to the tribal heritage of Arunachal Pradesh.
Educational institutions in and around Itanagar include the Rajiv Gandhi University at Rono Hills (a central university), the National Institute of Technology Arunachal Pradesh, and the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences.
