Isuzu Motors of Japan is one of the world's largest manufacturers of medium and heavy duty trucks and a long-established producer of diesel engines. The company entered the Indian market through its wholly owned subsidiary to participate in the growing demand for lifestyle pick-ups and utility vehicles. Prior to establishing its own manufacturing presence, Isuzu vehicles had been associated with the Indian market through technical and licensing arrangements with domestic manufacturers.
Isuzu Motors India operates a manufacturing facility at SriCity in Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. The plant assembles the D-Max pick-up and the MU-X sport utility vehicle for the Indian market, and also undertakes export production for select markets. The facility includes press, weld, paint and assembly operations.
The company sells vehicles through an authorised dealership network spread across major Indian cities and towns, supported by service outlets. Isuzu Motors India has positioned the V-Cross prominently in the lifestyle pick-up segment, a category which had limited prior presence in the Indian passenger vehicle market.
Isuzu Motors India is significant as one of the few Japanese automotive manufacturers focused primarily on pick-up trucks and body-on-frame SUVs in India. Its SriCity plant contributed to Andhra Pradesh's growth as an automotive manufacturing cluster, alongside other vehicle makers operating in the state. The introduction of the D-Max V-Cross helped popularise the lifestyle pick-up category in the Indian passenger vehicle market.
