Islamic University of Science and Technology, Pulwama

Overview

The Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) is a state university located at Awantipora in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Established through an act passed by the Jammu and Kashmir State Legislative Assembly in November 2005, the university was set up as a centre of higher learning for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and its neighbouring regions. It is situated about 25 km from Srinagar, the summer capital of the region.

IUST is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Following the reorganisation of the state of Jammu and Kashmir into a Union Territory after 5 August 2019, the Lieutenant Governor of the UT serves as the chancellor of the university; the post is currently held by Manoj Sinha. The executive council, chaired by the Vice Chancellor, functions as the executive authority of the university.

The institution offers a science and technology oriented curriculum, complemented by a School of Humanities and Social Sciences. It places emphasis on career development, personality enhancement and education aimed at fostering leadership skills among students.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has transferred 1,350 kanals of land near the campus, on which the university has planned a solar park, a biodiversity park and other infrastructure projects. In 2021, the campus received an international standard athletic track. On 1 January 2025, IUST became the first state university in Kashmir to receive a licence from the Ministry of Communication to establish a community radio station (FM 91.2 MHz) on its campus.
