The institute originated as the Nirma Institute of Technology, and on the formation of Nirma University it became one of the university's constituent institutes alongside others in management, pharmacy, science, law and architecture.
The institute is situated on the Nirma University campus on the Sarkhej–Gandhinagar Highway in Ahmedabad, sharing facilities with the other constituent institutes of the university.
The institute conducts programmes at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels across several departments of engineering. Typical disciplines covered include:
The Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) is the principal undergraduate programme. Postgraduate offerings include Master of Technology (M.Tech.) programmes in specialised streams, and the institute also admits scholars for doctoral (Ph.D.) research.
Nirma University was established under a Gujarat state legislative act, recognising the educational institutions previously run by the Nirma Education and Research Foundation as constituent institutes of a single university. The Institute of Technology, having been the foundation's first technical institute, became central to the new university's engineering education activity. Its programmes are approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
The institute operates from the main Nirma University campus in Ahmedabad, which houses departmental laboratories, lecture halls, computing facilities, a central library shared across constituent institutes, residential hostels, and sports and recreational infrastructure.
The Institute of Technology is regarded as one of the prominent private engineering institutes in Gujarat. It contributes to technical education in western India through its undergraduate engineering admissions, which draw candidates from across the country, and through its research and consultancy activities in collaboration with industry.
