IFGTB was established to address the research needs of the southern peninsular region of India, which is characterised by a wide range of forest types including tropical evergreen, deciduous, dry thorn, and montane shola forests. The institute was developed from earlier forestry research activities at Coimbatore and was reorganised as a dedicated institute under ICFRE, the apex national body coordinating forestry research, education, and extension in India.
The institute's mandate covers research and development in forest genetics, tree improvement, and applied biotechnology. Major areas of work include:
IFGTB operates through divisions covering genetics and tree breeding, plant biotechnology, plant physiology and biochemistry, forest ecology, and forest protection. It maintains experimental field stations, nurseries, herbaria, and laboratories that support both fundamental and applied research. The institute also collaborates with state forest departments, agricultural universities, and international research organisations on joint projects.
The institute supports doctoral and post-doctoral research in forestry sciences and is recognised as a research centre by universities for the award of higher degrees. It conducts short-term training programmes for forest officers, scientists, and stakeholders from the wood-based industry, and runs extension activities aimed at farmers practising tree cultivation on private lands.
As the principal forestry research institute serving peninsular India, IFGTB plays an important role in supporting plantation forestry, industrial wood supply, and conservation initiatives. Its work on clonal propagation of fast-growing species such as Eucalyptus and Casuarina has been used by state forest departments and tree growers to enhance productivity, while its research on indigenous species such as sandalwood and red sanders contributes to conservation strategies for commercially valuable but threatened taxa.
