The university was set up to expand access to higher education in southern Haryana, an area that historically had limited options for postgraduate study and research. Located on a campus at Meerpur, a short distance from the town of Rewari, IGU draws students primarily from Rewari, Mahendragarh, Gurugram, and adjoining districts. The institution functions under the Haryana State Higher Education Department and is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Indira Gandhi University offers teaching and research programmes through several faculties and departments. Common areas of study include:
The university also affiliates a number of colleges in the region, conducting their examinations and awarding degrees.
The main campus is situated at Meerpur on the Rewari–Narnaul corridor in Haryana. The campus houses academic blocks, administrative offices, a central library, hostels for students, and sports facilities. Its location places it close to the National Capital Region, providing connectivity through road and rail links via Rewari Junction.
As one of the state universities serving southern Haryana, IGU plays a notable role in widening higher-education access in a predominantly rural and semi-urban catchment. It contributes to teacher training, research output, and skilled-graduate supply in a region that feeds into the industrial belts of Manesar, Bawal, and Dharuhera, and the wider National Capital Region economy.
