The Indian Psychiatric Society brings together qualified psychiatrists from across India to promote the study and practice of psychiatry. The IPS is organised at national, zonal, and state or branch levels. Zonal branches cover the North, South, East, West, and Central regions of India, with state-level chapters operating under them. The Society is led by an elected office-bearer team, including a President, Vice-Presidents, Honorary General Secretary, and Treasurer, supported by an executive council drawn from across the zones.
As the apex psychiatric body in India, the Society has played a role in shaping training standards, advocating for mental health policy reforms, and contributing professional input to legislation such as mental health care laws. It also represents Indian psychiatry at international forums and maintains links with global bodies such as the World Psychiatric Association.
