The Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a Central University in India, established by an Act of the Indian Parliament, the Indian Maritime University Act, 2008, which came into force on 14 November 2008. Headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, the university was set up to facilitate and promote maritime studies, research, training, consultancy and extension work, with a focus on producing trained personnel for India's merchant navy, ports, shipping and allied maritime sectors.

Before the establishment of IMU, maritime education and training in India was offered through several specialised institutions operating independently under the Ministry of Shipping and other agencies. To consolidate and streamline maritime education at the tertiary level, the Government of India proposed a single, integrated central university dedicated to the sector. The proposal culminated in the enactment of the Indian Maritime University Act, 2008.
On its formation, IMU absorbed several pre-existing maritime institutes as constituent campuses, bringing under one academic umbrella a range of programmes in nautical science, marine engineering, naval architecture, port and shipping management, and related disciplines.

Several of these campuses evolved from earlier institutions such as the T. S. Chanakya, the Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) campuses at Mumbai and Kolkata, the Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research, the National Maritime Academy and the National Ship Design and Research Centre.

Admission to most undergraduate and postgraduate programmes is conducted through the Common Entrance Test (CET) administered by the university.
The university is governed in accordance with the Indian Maritime University Act, 2008, with a Visitor (the President of India), a Chancellor and a Vice-Chancellor as its principal officers. Statutory bodies include the Board of Management, the Academic Council, the Finance Committee and the Court. Administrative oversight at the government level rests with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
IMU is among the few central universities in India established with a sectoral focus, and is the principal institution dedicated to higher maritime education in the country. Its programmes contribute to the supply of certified officers and engineers for the merchant marine, technical professionals for shipbuilding and ports, and managerial talent for shipping and logistics. The university also undertakes research in areas such as ocean engineering, marine technology, port operations and maritime policy, supporting India's broader objectives in maritime trade and the blue economy.
