The IISERs were conceived as institutions that would combine undergraduate science education with research at the frontiers of knowledge, aiming to address a perceived gap between universities, which traditionally emphasised teaching, and dedicated research institutes, which had limited undergraduate involvement. IISER Thiruvananthapuram is the Kerala-based member of this network, and is part of a broader effort by the Government of India to strengthen scientific capacity in the country.
The institute offers integrated programmes in the basic sciences as well as doctoral and postdoctoral research opportunities. Its academic activity is organised around schools and centres covering disciplines such as biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics, with interdisciplinary work spanning these areas. Research at IISER Thiruvananthapuram contributes to peer-reviewed scientific literature across the natural sciences.
IISER Thiruvananthapuram operates from a campus in the Thiruvananthapuram region of Kerala, with academic, laboratory, residential and library facilities supporting its teaching and research mission.
As the southern node of the IISER network, the institute plays a role in the science education ecosystem of Kerala and southern India, training students who pursue research careers in academia, industry and government scientific establishments. It complements other major science and technology institutions in the region.
